Kenya Railways has announced the extension of departure time for the Nairobi-Mombasa Madaraka Express night train to amid the ongoing floods experienced across the country.
In a notice, the corporation revealed that the train services would be extended for two hours and depart at midnight instead of 10:00 pm.
This is to provide passengers ample time to arrive at the Nairobi bus Terminus owing to the traffic snarl-ups experienced along Mombasa Road.
"This adjustment is due to the heavy rainfall which has affected the movement on the roads," the notice read in part.
The Madaraka Express Passenger Service serves 13 destinations between Mombasa and Suswa stations. For users plying the Mombasa - Nairobi route, they are ferried using three train services; the Inter-County train, the Afternoon Express train and the night train.
Inter-county trains include scheduled stops at various destinations including Mariakani, Miasenyi, Voi, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi, Emali and Athi River stations.
The afternoon express train departs Mombasa and Nairobi Termini simultaneously at 3:00 pm and includes one stop at Voi station.
The Night train involves express service and involves departure from both Mombasa and Nairobi Termini simultaneously at night.
Other Madaraka Express passenger services include Nairobi Terminus to Suswa Station and Link Services.
Users who ply the Mombasa-Road route were adversely affected by the ongoing floods, with some motorists complaining of traffic that lasted over five hours.
Additionally, families in Imara Daima reached out to the Kenya Red Cross team after floods filled their houses at knee levels.
"At around 2030hrs, following a distress call received through our emergency line 1199, our first responders successfully evacuated a family stranded by floodwaters in their house in Imara Daima, bringing them to safety," Kenya Red Cross stated.
