The Ministry of Education on Friday directed schools severely affected by floods to remain closed until the situation is tamed.

Machogu in a statement noted several schools had been immensely affected by floods and that some learners couldn't resume with the current situation.

The ministry further stated that the said schools would remain closed until alternative infrastructure was set up for learning.

"In the meantime, the management of these schools should come up with strategies to recover lost time when learning resumes," the ministry stated.

All school heads and parents were also urged to ensure the safety of the pupils and students even as schools resume.

The government further called on people sheltering in schools to get alternative accommodation ahead of phased reopening.

Field education officers working in areas where schools are hosting displaced people were directed to liaise with local National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) to immediately identify alternative accommodation for those affected.

"Some of the people displaced from their homes due to the devastating effect of the rains have sought refuge in schools. Such schools may not be able to continue with the regular academic activities," read part of a statement by the Ministry of Education.

Regional education officers were also directed to come up with measures and ensure learning goes on without disruptions.

Among measures recommended by the ministry included resource sharing among neighbouring schools and the use of multi-grade and multi-shift models of providing education.

A warning was also issued to schools management against risking students' lives by residing them in life-threatening buildings, thus the ministry urged boards of management and teachers to ensure learners are placed in safe school shelters.

"County Education Boards (CEBs) are directed to convene urgent meetings to assess the situation and submit comprehensive reports to the Cabinet Secretary by May 10th 2024," the ministry announced.

Similarly, heads of institutions were directed to report the number of learners who will not have reported to school due to transport constraints and number of learners whose family members have been internally displaced.
