President William Ruto on Friday, May 3, revealed that the government would issue further directives on how learning will be conducted should the heavy rains and floods continue.

While addressing the nation on the ongoing weather conditions, Ruto noted that he had already given firm instructions to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on the same.

He highlighted that the government's intention was to ensure that learning continues despite the postponement of school reopening.

Notably, he made the remarks after he was questioned on whether the government was intending to adopt eLearning during the extended closure of schools.

As per Ruto's directive, Machogu will issue further guidelines after next week.

"The Ministry is fully informed on what needs to happen going forward. All the schools that were supposed to be reopened next week will now remain closed.

"The Ministry knows how it will work with the teachers to ensure that the department remains operational should the flooding continue past next week. The government will give more details and instructions after next week," he stated.

Notably, in an earlier circular that Machogu issued before the President's declarations, schools were to adopt the integration of learning centres and classes.

"Field education officers are hereby asked to come up with mitigation measures so that learning in these institutions is not disrupted. Some of these mitigation measures may include resource sharing among neighbouring schools

"Also, the use of multi-grade and multi-shift models of providing education (where applicable)," Machogu directed then.

Ruto postponed the reopening of the second term indefinitely owing to the current weather conditions which have seen sections of the country marooned with floods.

Additionally, various school infrastructures have also been destroyed in the ongoing floods.

Schools were set to reopen on Monday, May 6 after being pushed forward by one week on April 29.
