Sakaja's Administration Announces New Waived Licence Charges for Bars and Restaurants

The Nairobi County Government has unveiled waived fees for bars and restaurant businesses within the city.

In a Gazette Notice by Nairobi City County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning, Charles Kerich the waiver will affect these businesses effective immediately.

For instance, small bars with a capacity of up to 30 people, have their licences waived by 75 per cent with the new charges set at Ksh25,000 for licences.

It is noted that the new charge will apply to businesses that operate between 5 pm to 11 pm.

Medium bars that have a capacity of between 31 to 100 people have been given a 65 per cent waiver.

Following the changes, owners of these business outlets will be paying Ksh35,000 for the General retail alcoholic drinks licences.

On the other hand, Bars and Restaurants with a capacity of up to 30 people will now be paying Ksh50,000 after a 50 per cent waiver.

Similarly, medium bars and Restaurants that have a sitting capacity between 31 to 100 seats have been handed a 25 per cent waiver. The new licence rate has been set at Ksh75,000.

Owners of mega bars and restaurants with over 100 seats will be paying Ksh100,000 for their licences after a 23 per cent waiver was applied.

The new rates are set to take effect following the gazettement process.

Kerich added that the licence rates were waived following consultations with Governor Johnson Sakaja.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 5 (2) (a) of the Nairobi City County Tax Waivers Administration Act, 2013, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning in concurrence with the Governor waives the following fees and charges for Financial Year 2023/2024," read the notice in part.
