There was sorrow at a Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) marking centre after a teacher died on Tuesday, November 12.
In a press statement by Kenya National Examination Council (Knec), the examiner, Robert Kiua Muindi died while marking the exams expected to be out before December 25.
"It is with profound shock and regret that KNEC announces the death of Kiua who passed last night," the statement dated November 13, read in part.
Kiua who was a teacher at Tusumuni Primary School, Kilungu in Makueni County collapsed during the marking and was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
"The examiner suddenly fell ill at a marking centre in Nairobi and was rushed to PCEA Kikuyu Mission hospital where he was pronounced dead," the statement from Knec read.
Knec disclosed that it had informed the Teachers Service Commission(TSC) and Muindi's kin, further describing the teacher as a dedicated professional.
"The council will offer the necessary support to the family during the burial arrangements," the examinations' council assured.
A report by The Standard dated November 13 disclosed that the results were likely to be released in a week's time and the publication had established that teachers were working overtime to beat the deadline.
"Sources at KNEC yesterday (November 12) hinted that the remaining work might take another three or four days," the publication wrote.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Thursday, October 31, had stated that KCPE and KCSE examination results would be out before Christmas to enable parents to plan accordingly for the new year.
“We shall ensure before Christmas, the children know the secondary schools they will be joining so parents can start preparing earlier,” Magoha stated.
