5 Elephants Killed in Tsavo-West National Park

Two people have been arrested in connection with the killing of five elephants at the Tsavo-West National Park.

The Kenya Wildlife Service said the two were traced to Ndoomani area of Loitoktok sub-county where blood-stained weapons used to kill the elephants were found.

According to a Statement by KWS Spokesman Paul Udoto gunshots were heard in the park on Monday 6pm.

KWS rangers were dispatched on a search mission and found five carcasses of freshly poached elephants, comprising a female adult and four sub-adults with tusks missing, Capital reports.

Mr Udoto noted that the carcasses were traced at about 11am yesterday.

Joint operations between the KWS rangers and Tanzanian wildlife authorities traced the suspected poachers to a nearby manyatta.

A bloody axe, an axe handle, a hacksaw and akala shoes were found in one of the houses in Manyatta.

The Star reports that the suspects are believed to be part of a gang of four Tanzanians who operate cross the border, assisted by Kenyan locals.

The KWS spokesman added that the suspects are believed to have used motorbikes to escape with the tusks.

The incident comes amid a heightened campaign against poaching.
