The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) launched a crackdown on Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) for using illegal drop-off and pick-up points within the city.
This has seen over 100 PSVs and 1,000 motorbikes impounded at the Central Police Station.
Among the saccos on the spot for the vice include Unified Poa, ROG, Lucky BD Travellers, Nazigi Sacco and Eastleigh Circular Classic.
According to NMS chief enforcement officer Mark Leleruk, the vice has now spilt over to the estates.
He added that county enforcement officers would take action on rogue matatu operators.
"We are on a mission to clean the city centre and there is nothing that will stop us. The operation will continue until we restore sanity in this city," Leleruk stated.
He also pointed out that criminal activities within the city had become rampant as various muggings and theft cases involved perpetrators using motorbikes to carry out their schemes.
"We have involved the police in the process and we intend to speed up the process until we clear all the pavements and non-motorised transport corridors," he stated.
Leleruk revealed that the entity sought to round up hawkers, street children and parking boys operating in the CBD as part of its mission to clean up the city.
"Parking boys are still playing hide and seek with us but we have also managed to reduce their numbers. We are trying to rid the streets of them but what we currently face is that they keep coming back," he stated.
This comes as PSVs were recently allowed by the government to return to normal capacity but under strict observation of Covid-19 protocols.
As part of the agreement, the matatus saccos promised to self regulate while carrying full capacity.
