A bus belonging to Tahmeed Bus Company that was headed to Mombasa from Nairobi burst into flames on Saturday, January 28, near Voi town in Taita Taveta County.
According to preliminary reports, all 42 passengers that were travelling in the bus were evacuated.
Speaking after the incident, Voi Sub-County Police Commander Bernastein Shari stated that no casualties were reported following the incident, which occurred around 4:30 pm.
"The bus belonging to Tahmeed Bus Company with 42 passengers on board was heading to Mombasa from Nairobi," Shari told Nation.
By the time of this publication, the cause of the fire was had not been established but the bus was burned to ashes despite efforts by residents to extinguish the fire.
The bus company had not issued a statement regarding the accident and travel plans for the evacuated passengers.
It is not clear whether passengers also managed to pull their luggage from the bus heading to Mombasa.
According to car experts, the leading causes of car fires include fuel tank leaks, poor installations and overheated engines.
Others include poor maintenance, electrical problems and design flaws.
To protect passengers and other road users, motorists are required to take their vehicles for the mandatory inspection conducted by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Motor vehicles which fail to meet the set standards are barred from entering the road to protect other motorists.
To further enforce road safety, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordered a nationwide crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles.
"It's painful. In one year, we've lost more people through accidents than we lost during Covid. This is very painful to read as a government minister," CS Murkomen noted.
This is after NTSA data revealed that over 4,500 people had lost their lives due to road accidents.
