The United States on Monday issued a warning to its citizens in Kenya over the weekly CORD protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a letter signed by the US Embassy, Americans were informed of the Opposition's ongoing protests and urged to 'avoid gatherings, maintain security awareness at all times and monitor local media'.
“The US Embassy wishes to inform US citizens that opposition parties in Kenya have called for the resumption of weekly demonstrations to be held outside the office of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission,” the statement read in part.
The Embassy further told its citizens to avoid areas where the demonstrations were taking place, adding that though the protests may start out peaceful, chaos could erupt.
“Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security,” the Embassy stated.
The US added that though the locations of the protests were predictable, the venues could shift with little or no notice pleading with its people to remain vigilant.
The Opposition on Monday kicked off demonstrations in different Counties earlier than usual.
In Kisumu, the protests turned chaotic leaving one person shot dead.
It is reported that the demos started at Kondele area with protesters marching towards the Central Business District (CBD).
However, things turned chaotic after a rowdy group joined the peaceful protesters and tried to gain entry into the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices. This led to a scuffle between the anti-riot officers and the youth who allegedly attempted to loot shops in the CBD.
