A video showing a Nairobi street boy speaking eloquently in English has baffled many Kenyans on social media.
The command of English by the 15-year-old has elicited massive response from Facebook users who have expressed willingness to help the homeless boy out of the streets.
In the 2-minute video, Morris addresses the subject 'opportunity', which he defines before articulately delving further into it. He talks about the woes facing street children, saying that most of them are in the sorry state due to lack of opportunity in life.
“My message to the public is that in the streets we have talented people and we have those who also have knowledge. But what they are lacking is something called opportunity. Opportunity is an English word that simply means a chance,” Morris explains.
The minor picks an issue with the government with regard to the manner in which it handles families living in the streets. Morris particularly slams Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, recalling how the county government kicked them out of the streets ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit in July last year.
“I thought they were taking us to a better place where we would sleep, go to school and so on and so forth but they took us to the police station and some were even being killed,” he asserted.
Morris, whose story was first shared by the Homeless of Nairobi Charity Group, is said to have dropped out of school at class eight and joined the streets following family disputes.
According to the charity group, the brilliant boy sought life in the streets one year ago after suffering discrimination in a polygamous family.
The video has attracted many viewers willing to give donations with some offering to cater for his school fees; including Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, who is seeking the whereabouts of the boy.
Following the incredible response from the public, the charity group expressed its gratitude to Kenyans in another Facebook post.
“Wow! We are overwhelmed with the responses we've gotten about Morris. We're proud to say that within an hour of posting our last message, we received a call saying someone wants to donate the total amount for Morris to go to school for a full year whether it's boarding or day school,” read the statement in part.
