Villagers Attack Police in Naivasha

Police officers opened fire at a group of villagers that pelted them with stones at Longonot area in Naivasha, causing stray bullet injuries.

The officers were reportedly trying to protect a cornered suspect from being lynched by the public, when the angry residents turned on the law enforcers with stones.

During the Sunday incident, four people sustained severe bullet injuries as the police tried to disperse the mob, which claimed that the suspect was behind numerous robberies and attacks in the area.

According to Naivasha Sub-division Assistant Commissioner Eunice Wambua, the police opened fire to protect themselves from the rowdy group and as a result hit the four villagers.

“They turned rowdy and started pelting the officers with stones, forcing one of them to open fire,” Ms Wambua was quoted by the Nation.

Some of the victims, who are recuperating at the Naivasha Sub-County hospital, claimed they were not part of the rioting locals but were hit by stray bullets.

“I was walking along the highway when I heard shots and was hit by a bullet,” narrated Mr Peter Kimindiri, from his hospital bed.

Medical superintendent at the hospital reported that the four victims were in stable condition.
