Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a raft of police reforms aimed at enhancing service delivery and restoring public trust among the officers.
Speaking at an event in Garsen Constituency in Tana River County on Thursday afternoon, Murkomen noted that the reforms would include rigorous and frequent training of police officers.
According to the CS, all the police officers in Kenya would soon be subjected to fresh training to equip them with the necessary skills to effectively and responsibly discharge their duties.
He also revealed that the continuous training sessions were essential to ensure the safety of police officers and minimise harm to the public.
"We have said that our police stations must be centres of excellence. It is our fault as the government to train police officers only once in their careers. We have now decided to introduce police reforms.
"These reforms will include proper training of our police officers. The training would be continuous so that they can be able to use their stations properly to unite Kenyans," he said.
Murkomen also disclosed the government's intention to install CCTV cameras in all police stations across the country as part of the measures to curb corruption.
To further enhance service delivery within the National Police Service, the Interior CS announced the government's plans to acquire more police vehicles.
"All police stations will have CCTVs, and we will be monitoring police behaviour from Nairobi. If a civilian visits the police station, we will be able to know when they arrived there and whether they have been helped," the CS announced.
In his speech, Murkomen also issued a stern warning to Kenyans invading and burning down police stations. He revealed that decisive action would be taken against those found guilty of destroying police stations.
During the public address, the CS condemned the recent demonstrations that saw several businesses looted and property destroyed by goons.
He accused a section of opposition politicians of reportedly mobilising criminals to destroy and steal people's property.
"In some particular areas of the country, political actors organised goons to invade police stations and yet some people are still giving excuses of shares and cousins. We are not going to allow your tribalism to become a reason to invade police stations and loot people's shops," he warned.
