Kenya Met Lists Nairobi, Kisumu & Nakuru Among Regions to Experience Rains & Cold Weather

Rains are expected over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and North-western Kenya, the Meteorological Department has said.

In its five-day weather report published on Thursday, July 17, Kenya Met revealed that moderate to heavy rains were expected in the aforementioned regions between Friday this week to Tuesday next week.

Notably, counties located in the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley regions were projected to receive heavy rainfall, particularly in the afternoon. According to the weather department, the rains would be accompanied by thunderstorms.

Counties in these regions that were expected to receive the heavy downpour include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi.

Other counties forecast to experience a similar weather pattern include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

While most parts of the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley region were expected to receive above-average rainfall, the central part of Kenya was forecast to receive moderate downpours.

Counties in this region include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, with Kenya Met stating that rains in the ten counties would mostly begin in the afternoon.

However, no rainfall is expected in the South-eastern lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties for the next five days.

Other counties projected to remain warm and dry include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as the coastal parts of Tana River County.

Further, Kenya Met announced that occasional cold and cloudy conditions were likely to occur over parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the south-eastern lowlands, and the Rift Valley.

The meteorological department revealed that cold weather was expected in the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi.

Temperatures in these counties were forecast to drop to 7°C, before rising slightly to 10°C and subsequently falling to 9°C.

Kenya Met also predicted strong southerly to south-easterly winds, with speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s), over the Coast (including Kenya’s territorial waters), the south-eastern lowlands, and north-eastern and north-western Kenya.
