Update, Friday, April 26:  7 individuals have so far been rescued alive moments after the lorry they had boarded was swept by floods while attempting to cross the Muswii River in Makueni.

The 7 were part of a crowd of individuals who had boarded the lorry which was ferrying sand when the incident occurred.

A statement by the Kenya Red Cross revealed the victims were taken to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital following the incident.

"Our response efforts remain ongoing," the Red Cross stated.

About ten people have allegedly been swept away by floods while attempting to cross a flooded Muswii River in Makueni County.

The incident happened after the lorry which they had boarded attempted to cross the flooded river only for it to get swept away.

In the widely circulated video, the lorry could be seen stuck inside the flooded waters in the centre of the river.

The clip of the lorry crossing the flooded river on the shallow end captured a group of individuals of more than ten in number seated on top of it.

In the process of attempting to cross the river, the lorry accidentally slid into the deep end of the river before being entirely swept away with people onboard.

Following the incident, the victims could be seen attempting to brave the waters but were overwhelmed and swept away.

Residents quickly gathered near the river even as the rescue operations intensified to save the people.

The number of people recovered from the flooded river is yet to be revealed even as rescue operations continue.

The County Government of Makueni while confirming the incident noted an emergency team from the county had been alerted.

"The department immediately activated emergency response systems to rescue those trapped in the lorry and others taking cover on trees marooned by the waters," read part of a statement by Makueni County Government.

"We urge the public to be careful when crossing swollen rivers during this rainy season," the statement added.

In a similar incident in November last year, about eight people were swept away after attempting to cross the flooded river Muooni which is located in Machakos County.

The 8 were part of a team that was travelling back from First Lady Rachel Ruto's 14th Anniversary of the Joyful Women Organization (JOYWO) held in Kasarani Stadium.

A witness who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, said the incident occurred at 11.00 pm on the fateful night.

"Yes, the guests were from the event organised by the First Lady. It is so sad to report that some of the deceased were relatives," the correspondent stated.
