The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Wednesday announced the temporary closure of specific parts of Thika Superhighway following heavy rains that rendered parts of the busy stretch impassable.

In an official statement, KeNHA announced the closure of the Kahawa Sukari drift between Kahawa Barracks and Kenyatta University for vehicles headed towards Thika.

KeNHA further cautioned motorists against attempts to use the section of the road which the agency reiterated would be against their best interests.

However, the authority provided that motorists heading to Thika may use alternative routes like Kiambu Road and later turn off to the Northern Bypass to Ruiru and vice versa.

On Wednesday morning, motorists on the road were caught up in heavy traffic snarl-ups that had resulted from the closure of several lanes on the road.

Additionally, as a result of lane sharing, few vehicles were involved in fender benders, exacerbating the situation.

However, law enforcement officers and KeNHA officials were dispatched to the site to manage the situation.

In a separate road closure on Wednesday morning, KeNHA also closed down Athi River - Namanga Road (A2) at Kimalat area.

The road was stated to be affected by floods after River Kimalat burst it banks after it rained heavily during the night.

However, the authority also cautioned users against using alternative earth roads as they were equally flooded.

KeNHA has continued to issue road closure updates following floods that have been affecting various parts of the country.

On Tuesday, the Authority closed several roads following the flooding of some and the cracking of others.
