Tenants from a residential building in Kiamumbi, Kiambu County were on Thursday, May 2, ordered to vacate the building after it developed cracks.

In a statement issued by Governor Kimani Wamatangi, it was revealed that the building had cracks and showed signs of sinking which posed a risk to the residents.

"Based on the recommendation of the multi-agency team tasked with addressing the flooding menace in our county, we have ordered the immediate evacuation of all occupants of a residential flat in the Kiamumbi area of Kiambu Sub County," read part of the statement.

The governor added that preliminary inspection revealed that the occupants may be exposed to danger if they remained in the building.

After the directive, the tenants were seen running back and forth from the building to salvage their household items.

Some of the tenants at the 3-storey building were seen throwing clothes from the top floor to their relatives on the ground floor.

Despite being rescued from the looming tragedy the tenants were left in a dilemma without a place to stay as the heavy rains destroyed property countrywide.

Wamatangi directed them to seek refuge in a nearby church. Also, he assured them that the county government would assist.

Additionally, Governor Wamatangi prohibited any occupancy of the building until a thorough inspection was done to ensure safety.

"Following the evacuation, the multi-agency team will inspect the building to determine its safety for reoccupation. Until such time, occupancy of the building will not be permitted," the governor remarked.

He further urged all residents to comply with the evacuation directive as well as other orders for their safety and well-being.

The governor was lauded by some tenants for the early prevention measures to save lives in the county. He was further urged to expedite the repair of destroyed infrastructure in the region.

"We are hoping that safety will be upheld especially during these heavy rains. We are glad this issue has been caught earlier to save both property and lives," one of the tenants stated.
