The Tiaty East Constituency police were on Wednesday, March 27 forced to fire shots to disperse a group of rowdy youths who raided and vandalised their police station.
A group of over 300 youths staged a protest at Tangulbei Police Station at around 4:00 pm, demanding justice for the death of a local.
According to a police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the youths were demanding answers after a 24-year-old local was attacked and lynched by thugs moments after being released from the police station.
The youth, who had been arrested for assaulting a police officer, was released on a Ksh30,000 cash bail by the Court on the material day.
“The deceased decided to trek from Kabarnet to his home in Tangulbei and when he reached Loberer area he was accosted by goons who attacked and set him ablaze,” the police report reads in part.
“After receiving the sad news the locals decided to raid the station allegedly blaming officers for his death.”
During the protest, the youths vandalised a police vehicle's windscreen, doors, and headlights.
Consequently, they also damaged office furniture, windows, and roof sheets, and stole seven motorcycles, including four belonging to the police officers.
No injuries were reported among the protesters. However, one police officer was rushed to the Tangulbei Sub-County Hospital for treatment, after he was hit by a stone on his face, losing one front tooth.
Sub-County Criminal Investigation Officers (SCCIO) from Tiaty East have launched investigations to ensure that justice is served and the culprits are brought to book.
In line with police assault cases, in February, two female police officers were assaulted and a gun stolen, while they were on patrol around the Kiwanjani area in Kasarani.
One of the officers fired at the assailants as they fled the area.
