Bandits launched an attack at Kaben village in Elgeyo Marakwet barely a day after a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) chopper crashed in the area.

In the incident that occurred on Friday, April 19, minutes after 2 pm, it was reported that armed bandits raided the village to steal cattle.

Area governor, Wisley Rotich indicated that the attack happened while there were still heavy security officers in the area following the Thursday crash.

It was noted that most of the officers were in the area to secure the crash site where some KDF personnel including CDF Francis Ogolla lost their lives.

The bandit raid led to a shoutout which is reported to have lasted for hours. However, the security officers were able to repulse the bandits.

According to the governor, some of the bandits left with cattle owned by the residents.

"Emboldened bandits could not allow us to mourn CDF Ogolla, his team and the old man from Kowow village in peace.

"They just raided and stole animals at Kaben village near the crash site when security agencies were trying to evaluate the scene. How heartless can these bandits be?" Rotich posed.

Further, he called for the use of lethal force, underpinning the suffering of most of the residents.

He also noted that the actions of the bandits were disrespectful given that soldiers who lost their lives in the Thursday crash had not been laid to rest.

"The direct and indirect human losses that we have made in this banditry war are just too much. It has to stop," he stated.

It is still unclear whether there were still any casualties with security agencies yet to issue a statement on the incident.
