The journey to the final send-off of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Francis Ogolla during the memorial service on Saturday followed strict military protocol in line with the general's rank in service.

The event, held in Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, began at 6:00 am with military officers conducting drills and rehearsals to familiarise them with the prescribed movements.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers set up the complex to welcome the dignitaries at the event.

At midday, a contingent of officers arrived with the casket bearing the body of the late CDF which was brought by a military gun carrier.

Primarily, the vehicle was also used to carry former Presidents Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki.

The coffin was covered in the Kenyan flag in honour of the veteran's military service to his country.

Thereafter, Ogolla's medals of honour, boots and Kenyan flag were draped on the casket during the memorial service.

This is a symbol of respect for Ogolla's sacrifice, courage and valour to the country, with the medals embodying his identity.

During the service, the Assistant Chief of the Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P&L) Major General David Keter read Ogolla's biography, detailing his achievements and history.

Following the service, a minute of silence was observed with the servicemen and women gesturing a salute.

Ogolla received a 19-gun salute, a formal honour given to state officials and field marshals.

The number of gun salutes fired during the service depends on one's status with heads of state receiving a 21-gun salute, generals receiving 17 and brigadiers receiving 11.

The military officers then proceeded to the dais and carried the coffin as both the Kenyan national anthem and the East-African anthem were played.
