Traffic along the Thika superhighway was on Wednesday disrupted after Githurai 45 residents staged demonstrations along the ever-busy highway.
The residents while demonstrating, barricaded the highway with rocks, blocking the movement of vehicles and forcing motorists to look for alternative routes.
The residents lamented the government's failure to resolve the flooding menace caused by the ongoing heavy rains.
While voicing their frustrations, the residents accused the govt of failing to provide tangible solutions as their homes continued being marooned in floods.
In the widely circulated videos, the residents could be seen confronting a group of police officers who attempted to quell the situation.
As the episode unfolded, the attention of motorists stranded in traffic was diverted as most of them came out of their cars to witness the clash.
The residents who aggressively approached the police were repelled using tear gas canisters lobbed at them by the officers.
Even as the situation escalated, passengers were stranded in the vehicles and were forced to alight and trek to their destinations.
The protests come even as rains continue to wreak havoc in different parts of Nairobi with several houses submerged by flood waters.
Transport within the capital was also paralysed by the heavy rains with many motorists reporting experiencing challenges getting to their destinations.
The protests also come hours after the Kenya Red Cross saved 18 people, including 11 adults and 7 children from flood waters at the Mradi area of Mathare.
"The rainfall affected numerous areas throughout the city. Other life-saving interventions are ongoing in other parts of the country," read part of a statement by the Kenya Red Cross.
