A lobby group consisting of the late Professor Wangari Mathaai's Green Belt Movement and the Law Society of Kenya on Thursday, April 18, threatened to sue Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

This follows the governor's controversial statement on the commercialisation of the revamped Uhuru Park grounds.

According to the groups, the commercialisation of Uhuru Park would immensely affect the park's extensive green space.

Thus, the group demanded that Sakaja immediately withdraw his statement on the construction of a nightclub inside the famous park.

“We demand that this be done not any later than Friday, April 19 2024 6 pm,” read part of the statement.

Sakaja was also directed to surrender a report on public participation done before the announcement. The report should be submitted no later than 48 hours from the date of submission of the letter.

"My clients are willing to indulge the County not more than three days in respect to availing of documents," the groups stated.

According to the groups, failure by the governor to heed the above demands will institute a lawsuit filed on behalf of the people of Nairobi.

The demand note comes barely hours after the governor promised a modern nightclub inside the Uhuru Park.

Speaking during the official handing over of Uhuru Park on Thursday, April 18, Sakaja noted the Nairobi County Government would put up a Ksh156 million dancing fountain, among other improvements, inside the park.

"We are going to issue tenders for business facilities that are here. We have restaurants, such as African restaurants. There is a nightclub that is going to be here," Sakaja stated.

"You can come here and scream the way you want. We do not want noise in the estates. That tendering will be done in a very transparent way," he added.
